Spiral steel pipe, also known as spiral submerged arc welded (SSAW) pipe, is manufactured from steel strip coil. The strip is formed into a helix at room temperature and the spiral seam is joined using an automatic double-wire, double-sided submerged arc welding process.
Because the seam runs helically along the pipe, a relatively narrow strip can be used to produce pipes of large diameter. This makes spiral steel pipe an economical choice for long pipelines and large-bore transmission lines.
Key features
- Made from steel strip coil, formed at room temperature
- Double-sided submerged arc welding on the inside and outside of the seam
