Seamless steel pipe is produced from a solid round steel billet that is pierced to form a hollow shell and then brought to its final dimensions. Because the pipe is made from a single piece of steel, there is no weld on its surface, which gives the pipe body a uniform structure around its entire circumference.
Depending on the production method, seamless pipes are classified as hot-rolled, cold-rolled, cold-drawn and extruded seamless pipe. Hot-rolled pipe is typically used for larger diameters and heavier walls, while cold-rolled and cold-drawn pipe offer tighter dimensional tolerances and a smoother surface finish.
Key features
- No weld seam – a homogeneous pipe wall without a weld line
- Uniform strength around the full circumference of the pipe
- Multiple production routes – hot-rolled, cold-rolled, cold-drawn and extruded
- Well suited to applications involving pressure and temperature
Application areas
- Oil, gas and petrochemical pipelines
- Boilers, heat exchangers and steam systems
- Hydraulic and mechanical engineering
- Industrial process piping and general structural use
